Nandita Das was born on 7th November 1969 in New Delhi, India. Her father is a painter Jatin Das, who was from Orissa and her mother Varsha Das is a writer. She married Soumya Sen in 2002.
Das studied at the Sardar Patel Vidyalaya in New Delhi and has a degree in Geography from the Delhi School of Social Work. She was part of a theater group Jannatya Manch. She worked as a teacher at the Rishi Valley School, Bangalore and later with Ankur, an NGO and Alarippu, which focused on educating underprivileged children.
She has done the narration for audio books like Karadi Tales’ Under the Banyan and Charkha Audiobooks’ autobiography of Mahatma Gandhi.

1989 to 2000 Nandita Das made her debut with Prakash Jha’s made for television movie in Oriyan called Parinati (1989). Her next movie Deepa Mehta’s Fire (1996) was based on the taboo subject of homosexuality. She shared screen space with Shabana Azmi. On releasing in India, even as critics praised the movie, there was also a lot of violence.
She was part of Deepa Mehta’s next movie Earth (1998) which was about the partition of India. She played a Hindu woman in love with a Muslim man. The movie starred Aamir Khan and Rahul Khanna. Nagesh Kukunoor’s Rockford (1999) saw her as a Lily Vegas, a teacher.
2001 to 2005 In Bawandar (2000), her portrayal of Sanwari, a woman who is raped and tries to battle it out in court, won her the Best Actress Award at the Santa Monica Film Festival.
She worked in many movies like Azhagi (2002), Lal Salaam (2002), Bas Yun Hi (2003), Shubho Mahurat (2003) and Vishwa Tulasi (2003).
2006 to 2009 In 2006, she had a role in Jag Mundhra’s Provoked as Radha Dalal, a social worker. It was based on a true story about domestic violence. The Telugu movie Kamli won her the Nandi Award for Best Actress. The year 2007 saw her in an English language movie Before the Rains and a Malayalam movie Naalu Pennungal.
Nandita Das’ directorial debut Firaaq is about the aftermath of the Gujarat riots scanning the lives of different people in one day. At the Asian First Film Festival, it won two awards for Best Film and Best Screenplay.
Das will be seen next in Midnight’s Children, adapted from an award winning book by Salman Rushdie.
