Amrita Singh, a fierce beauty, is a Bollywood actress who stepped back from acting when she married the Chotte Nawab and is now seen on the big screen sporadically.

Amrita Singh was born on 9th February 1958 in Hadali, Punjab to a Punjab Sikh family. She did her schooling in Modern School, New Delhi.
Her father was Shivinder Singh who was in the armed forces. Her mother Rukhsana Sultana was a friend and supporter of politician Sanjay Gandhi. Her great grandfather was Sir Sobha Singh, a civil contractor and her great granduncle is the author Khushwant Singh.
When she married actor and the son of the Nawab of Pataudi, Saif Ali Khan in 1991 it created uproar as she was twelve years older than Saif and his family didn’t approve of her. The couple had two children, Sara and Ibrahim. They separated in 2004 and Saif is dating actress Kareena Kapoor.
Amrita Singh was a belly dancer and when she decided to become an actress she stirred up a controversy. Her mother tried to get her into B.R. Chopra’s Nikah but he had already finalized on Salma Agha, who started receiving threatening letters. As it turned out they were sent by Amrita. Her wild temper with the press also earned her a reputation.

Sunny (1984) and Chameli Ki Shaadi (1986) were popular with the audience. Toofan (1989) with Amitabh Bachchan and Raju Ban Gay Gentleman (1992) with Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla were successful.
In Aaina (1993) she played Roma, Juhi Chawla’s sister and they both fall in love with Jackie Shroff’s character and Roma goes all out to break up her sister’s marriage. It won her the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award.
