Cinema career

Anu Prabhakar first appeared as a child artist in the film 'Chapala Chennigaraya'. Her first movie in a female-lead role was Hrudaya Hrudaya (1999), a Kannada movie starring Shivarajkumar. She has also acted in two Tamil movies.

Anjana Bhowmik ( Bengali: অঞ্জনা ভৌমিক ) was born on December 30, 1944 in Cooch Behar. Her real name is Arati Bhowmik and nickname Babin. Her father was Bibhuti Bhusan Bhowmik. She spent her school days in Cooch Behar. She passed the Higher Secondary Exam of West Bengal Board from Suniti Academy of Cooch Behar in 1961. After that she also studied in Sorojini Naidu College. She made her film debut at the age of 20 in the 1964 film “Anustup Chanda” directed by Pijush Bose. Before releasing the film she changed her name to Anjana to Arati. Right from the first film she became popular. Her acting talent was praised not only by the audience but also by the critic. She became one of the major heroines of Uttam Kumar. She and Uttam Kumar gave major hits like “Chowringhee”, “Kokhono Megh”, “Nayika Sambad”, “Roudra Chhaya”, “Raj Drohi”. At a certain time of her career when critics predicted she wouldn’t be successful without Uttam Kumar as hero, she paired with Soumitra Chattopadhyay in “Mahashweta” and it was highly acclaimed. Anjana got married to Navy Officer Arun Sharma and now settled in Mumbai. She has acted in more than 350 films which also includes Telugu, Tamil and Kannada language films.Brundavanam (1992), Anna Vadina (1993) and Police Alludu (1994) are few last films of her film career. In Balaiah's Police Alludu and Anna Vadina she appeared alongside Brahmanandam.

Aa a producer
In 1955 she produced hit film Anarkali where she herself played the lead role of Anarkali alongwith superstar Akkineni Nageshwara Rao as Salim. Then she produced V. Madhusudan Rao's Bhakta Tukaram and also Chandipriya by the same director. Bollywood actress Jayapradha played the lead role in her film Chandipriya alongside Shobhan Babu and Chiranjeevi.   

ACHIEVEMENTS
In 2005 the actress was honored with the Raghupathi Venkaiah Award for her contribution to Telugu film industry. She also received the  ANR National Award in 2007.

Currently, Anjali is working on five films simultaneously, including Angaadi Theru, directed by Vasanthabalan, who earlier directed the National Film Award winning Tamil film, Veyyil, and Rettai Suzhi, in which she will be sharing screen with veteran directors Bharathiraja and K. Balachandar.

Anita Guha was an Indian actress who usually played mythological characters in films. She became most famous for playing the title role in "Jai Santoshi Maa" (1975). Previously, she had played Sita in other mythological films "Sampoorna Ramayana" (1961), "Shree Ram Bharat milap" (1965) and, "Tulsi vivah" (1971).


She came to Mumbai in the 1950s as a beauty pageant contestant, when she was 15 years old. She became an actress there and made her film debut in "Tangewali" (1955). She moved onto hit films like "Sharada" (1957).

But it was her title role in "Jai Santoshi Maa" (1975) that brought her the most fame. She had never even heard of goddess Santoshi until she was offered the role, as this was a little-known goddesss. It was only a guest appearance, and her scenes were shot 10-12 days. She fasted during the shooting.
 The low-budget pic was a surprise hit, and broke box office records while becoming a cultural phenomenon. The goddess Santoshi now became a famous goddess, and women all over India worshipped her. People treated the movie theatres showing "Jai Santoshi Maa" as a temple, bringing offerings of food, leaving slippers at the door. Guha claimed that people came to her asking her to bless them, as they perceived her to be a real goddess. Oddly, she never became a devotee of the goddess herself, claiming that she was a devotee of Kali Maa.

Other mythological films she acted in include "Dekh Kabira roya" (1957), "Kavi Kalidas (1959) "Jai Dwarkadesh" (1977) and "Krishna Krishna" (1986). She wasn't happy that she became typecast as a mythological actress, because acting offers eventually stopped coming her way.

Her earlier credits include period films such as "Sangeet samrat Tansen" (1962), "Kan kan mein bhagwan" (1963), "Veer Bhimsen" (1964). She played Rajesh Khanna's adoptive mother in the huge hit "Aradhana" (1969).

She was married to actor Manik Dutt; they had no children. After her husband's death, she lived alone in Mumbai where she died of cardiac failure on June 20, 2007.The actress, who was in her 70s and was ailing for some time, died at a private hospital in Mumbai.

Guha counted yesteryear's actresses Mala Sinha and Helen among her friends. Enquiries at Mala Sinha's home revealed that she attended Guha's last rites.
